Excursion 3: Strasbourg from the Water (Private Cruise)
October 16, 20:00-21:10

Built on the elevated part of a marshland and surrounded by three rivers - the Ill, the Bruche and the Rhine – Strasbourg’s history has always been tied to that of its waterways. It is through and because of these that Strasbourg succeeded in maintaining its roles as a border town, a centre of trade and a defensive stronghold. In this boat cruise on the Ill, you will navigate the canals of the Petite France, pass through its locks, and admire the covered bridges which were part of a medieval defence system reinforced by Vauban in the 18th century. You will then continue north of the Grande Ile, up the Canal du Faux-Rempart, towards the European institutions. There you will have a splendid view of the futuristic buildings of European Parliament and the European Council before returning to the city centre trough the tree-lined canals. On the last part of the circuit you will pass the quai des Pêcheurs (Fishermen’s wharf) and the quai des Bateliers (Boatmen’s wharf) where buildings from several periods will reveal the long occupation of these sites and give you an insight into the evolution of architecture from the middle ages to the present. On reaching the landing stage, you will alight next to the Palais Rohan, the grand residence of the prince-bishops of Strasbourg, built in the French style in the 18th century.

Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
